Kids Martial Arts Classes NYC : A punch is a core technique that requires focus and also strengthens the body. So, how do you punch in karate?

Before your child can deliver a punch, they need to be in the right position or stance. We call the natural stance Shizentai. In Shizentai, your legs are shoulder-width apart, slightly loose, and your knees are soft. One leg is in front of your body, while the other leg is behind your body. You will position a closed fist, palm up, at your side at the hip level.

Standing punch – Choku Zuki

If your child is practicing alone, then they should visualize their opponent. They can aim their blow at the body (Chuudan) or the face (Jodan). The movement of your kid’s punch should follow a straight line, while they continue to keep their elbows in.

At the last moment before contact, your child should turn their palm over. In this position, your palm is face down. Exhale (Kiai) at the moment that you deliver your strike and return to the starting position.

Reverse punch – Gyaku Zuki

Firstly, the reverse punch uses your rear arm, and the power comes from the rotation of the hips. Therefore, you start from a front stance with your blocking hand extended out in front of you. Rotate your hips, bring your punch forward, while bringing your blocking hand back. Contract your abdominals as your strike and keep feet planted on the ground or you will lose power.

Lunging punch – Oi-Zuki

You start from a front stance with your blocking hand extended out in front of you. Slide your back leg forward until it is in line with your front leg. Keep your head on the same level, lunge forward and deliver punch as you exhale. Remember to turn your palm over at the last moment.
